Yahweh - A vocalization. favored by most theologians,
of the tetragammaton -- the name of God ("JHWH") found throughout
the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). An alternate pronounciation
is Jehovah. (Religious
Tolerance).
God of the Hebrews, believed to be the creator and sustainer
of the world and all within it; demanded that the Hebrews,
his chosen people, observe high moral and ethical standards.
Monotheism represented by belief in Yahweh had a deep influence
on the development of Christianity and Islam.
Secret name of God. The Tetragrammaton or 4-Letter-Word:
YHVH. Original pronunciation is unknown.
Yahweh is the Hebrew God worshiped exclusively when the Hebrews
became monotheists, c. 1000 BCE. This is the God in the Old
Testament. The Hebrews believe that if they place their trust
in Yehweh, then they will be provided for. .
