Torah - The first five books of the Hebrew bible (Genesis,
Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) portions of which
are read every Shabbat. Traditionally, a reading of the entire
Torah is complete in one year.
The Torah is comprised of two components: The Written Torah
and the Oral Torah. According to Jewish learning, they were
both delivered to Moses at Mount Sinai. The Written Torah
is comprised of the Five Books of Moses.
The Torah, containing the Holy texts of the five books of
Moses, the Prophets, and the Writings was given to Moses on
Mount Sinai shortly after the Egyptians freed the people of
Israel (the Jewish nation) from slavery. God gave these teachings
to Moses.
The Pentateuch, or the entire body of Jewish religious literature,
law and teaching as contained chiefly in the Old Testament
and Talmud.
