Catholic
This
came from the Greek word Katholikos which means "throughout
the whole" or "universal." This implies a world-wide
faith, rather than a local one. The Nicene Creed,
recited in the churches of many Christian denominations,
speaks of "one holy catholic and apostolic church."
Many faith groups refer to themselves as Catholic:
the Roman Catholic Church, centered in the Vatican;
Anglo-Catholics (within the Anglican Communion); and
Evangelical Catholics (among Lutherans).

(holos) or more generally "universal") is a religious

In
the original versions of the ecumenical creeds, the
word "catholic" is used to describe the entire church
or the Christian faith. In this context, to call oneself
"catholic" is to confess the fullness of the Christian
faith without alteration. In order to avoid confusion,
it is best to use the full name, Roman Catholic Church,
when referring to that church body. (LCMS)
