The
Baptist Church
The first Baptist congregations sects appeared at the start
of the seventeenth century. As Baptists, they believed each
person is responsible to make her or his own commitment of
faith in God. Most Baptist churches do not have an age restriction
on membership,
but will not accept as a member a child that is too young
to make a profession of faith.
Baptist
churches are often regarded as an Evangelical Protestant denomination
originating from the English Puritan movement. Many baptist
churches function independently. The Baptists have no bishops
or organization to place pastors in a field, they are chosen
by the church. There are more than 300,000 baptist congregations.
When
the baptist church began non-conformists faced much persecution,
with the punishment for being a Baptist including imprisonment
and drowning!
